What is SmartSlide™?
| SmartSlide™ is a disposable Lab-on-a-chip which works on liquid samples for various different tasks, such as enrichment, label-free separation, mating of cells and/or microbeads. Thanks to its flexibility, an increasing range of applications is being developed for these chips. SmartSlide ™ is controlled by a simple four-button instrument which allows the user to select the various protocols and set the parameters for a specific application. SmartSlide™ represents an innovative and cheap alternative to some traditional biological labor-intensive procedures. The system allows one to perform complex preparatory protocols on the same platform using very small sample volumes. SmartSlide™ requires minimal system set-up, sample preparation or training time. Sample loading is an extremely easy operation, using a pipette or syringe. The SmartSlide™ chip family can manage volumes from 2 microliters up to tens of microliters. Cells are trapped in stable levitation using dielectrophoretic closed potential cages. A dynamic voltage pattern allows one to move trapped particles. By exploiting the differential physical properties of particles it is possible to selectively move certain cells, enabling separation. Cages can also be used to promote cell-cell or cell-bead interactions. Cells are kept in levitation in low field regions. Negligible electrical and thermal stresses and the use of biocompatible materials afford high cell viability (typically more than 90%). The device has real-time control of the temperature inside the microchamber. Laminar fluid flow enables selected cells to be recovered in a few seconds.
